Best Time to Visit Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh

Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh is once again in the news after the skirmish between China and the Indian Army. Due to the border dispute between India and China, there is more movement of military vehicles of the Indian Army in Tawang. However, Tawang is famous for its unmatched beauty and Buddhist monasteries. The natural beauty here, the snowy mountains and the green valleys fascinate the tourists. Tawang Monastery, which is included in the main attractions of Arunachal Pradesh, is also known as Golden Namgyal Lhase. This monastery is situated at an altitude of about 3,000 meters above sea level. It has the status of India's largest and second largest monastery in the world. It is about 400 years old which is known as the shelter of more than 300 Buddhist monks.

The best time to visit Tawang is from March to September as this place is perfect to visit in summer and monsoon. But if you want to enjoy snowfall and snow-capped mountains, then you should go here during the winter season. Although the temperature here remains around one to three degrees in winter.


Tawang is a hilly area and there is no airport or railway station here. The nearest airport is Tezpur in Assam, which is about 317 kilometers from Tawang. You can go to Tawang from Tezpur. However, to reach Tawang from other parts of the country, Guwahati airport is better, which is about 480 kilometers from Tawang. From here you can go to Tawang by road.

The most popular and easiest way to reach Tawang is by road. You can reach Tawang by hiring a bus or cab. There is no railway station in Tawang. Its nearest railway station is Rangapara in Assam. The distance from Rangapara to Tawang is about 383 kms. That's why from Rangapara railway station you will have to travel further by cab or bus.
